The first step is to take the cable car up to the secondary summit of the Hochkar. You’ll float leisurely all the way up and after a few minutes on foot, you’ll reach an altitude of 1,760 metres. That’s where they are waiting for you: a 60-metre suspension bridge and a 900-metre circular hike to the scenic-view platform. He’s called the “Majesty of the Mostviertel region” and is known far beyond the borders of Austria: the Ötscher. The 1,893-metre mountain is a popular hiking and running destination in summer. But first things first: A good level of endurance is an absolute must for trail running on the king of the Ybbstal Alps.
From the quaint village of Lackenhof, the trail leads you up the giant of the Mostviertel across forest trails, ski slopes and easy walking trails. In higher altitudes, lots of serpentines follow and the ascent gets increasingly difficult. Via the Riffelsattel, you’ll continue to the Ötscherschutzhaus and further up until you eventually reach summit joy.
