Since the construction of  Großglockner Hochalpenstraße not only experienced mountaineers are able to discover the beauty of Großglockner. You may not get straight to the peak at 3,789 m, that's true, but you will certainly enjoy a gigantic panorama. 
That's not all: There are even more adventures around Großglockner, ice for example. At  Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe  a unique glacier experience is waiting for you. Explore eight-kilometre-long Pasterze, the largest glacier of Austria. Sounds impressive, doesn't it?

Glacier Trekking

Along Pasterze

Equipped with climbing iron and ice pick you explore the world of eternal ice. Discover Pasterze, the largest glacier of the Eastern Alps and join us on this unique trekking tour enjoying the alpine panorama of Hohe Tauern.
Your guide will lead you to the top. Good physical shape is necessary, the entire tour will take nearly six hours. You start at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe each Tuesday at 10:15 am.

  • Start and meeting point: 10:15 Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe visitors' centre
  • Duration: approx. 6 hrs.,  5 hrs. net walking time (250 vertical metres)
  • Number of participants: min. 2 adults, max. 9 participants
  • Requirements: good shape and minimum age of 8
  • Services included: guided glacier tour with certified mountain guide, rent equipment, Booklet „Ewiges Eis – die Pasterze in Bildern seit 1870“ and a HochGenuss Gruß (regionally produced cereal bar)

A Ride On The Historic Glacier Lift

You do not want to participate at the 6-hour-trekking tour? Don't worry. You still can be part of the glacier experience. The historic glacier lift will take you down without any effort.
In former days you were directly surrounded by the glacier when leaving the lift, but today it takes a 50-minute-walk to reach the ice. Over the years the glacier has diminished considerably.
But no worries: You will still see many thrilling spots and places along the walk. Fun and thrills are guaranteed.

Curve After Curve Up To The Highest Mountain Of Austria

This is for sure:  This road is one of the best-known roads in Austria -  Großglockner Hochalpenstraße. 35 curves lead up to 2, 571 m above sea level, getting closer and closer to Mount Großglockner. Many breath-taking moments along the road are guaranteed.
You start in Salzburg or in Carinthia. The well-known high-alpine road connects the two Austrian provinces.
No matter where you start from. The drive is really unique. Flourishing alpine pastures, the scent of alpine forests, gigantic rocks up to the eternal ice. An absolute highlight! Hochtor is situated at 2,504 m above sea level. Enjoy the enormous panoramic view of more than 30 mountains higher than 3,000m.
