Climbing & via ferrata in Hinterstoder
In the south of Upper Austria, you can climb steep rock faces towards the summit like a chamois. Are you planning a climbing vacation soon or have you always wanted to try the sport? Perfect! Well-secured, you can head straight to the top near the Hinterstoder ski and hiking area - on Stoder's local mountains Spitzmauer and Großer Priel.
Whether for the first time, regularly or even passionately: There is climbing in Hinterstoder! The following three via ferratas are different in their requirements. But they all have one thing in common: fantastic views of the surrounding mountains!
Via ferrata - Poppenberg
Ideal for beginners
The Poppenberg via ferrata is the easiest of the three via ferrata routes. However, an average level of fitness and strength in the hands and arms are also required here!
The approach is 50 meters north of the Hinterstoder sewage treatment plant, directly on the sidewalk of the Stodertaler Landesstraße.
After one to one and a half hours of climbing, climbers reach the viewing platform at the summit of the Poppenberg. The twenty-minute descent is along the marked hiking trail.

Stodertaler climb up the Spitzmauer
for experts
The tour to the Stodertaler-Steig starts from the Prielschutzhaus parking lot, one kilometer from the village center. It takes 30 minutes on a forest road to the material cable car, where the trail to the Prielschutzhaus begins.
From here, hiking trail no. 201 leads to the Klinserscharte and, at the fork in the trail, through the northern slope of the Klinserschlucht gorge to the actual start.
Then it's 200 meters up to the Spitzmauer! The via ferrata is secured with a steel cable throughout, and in some places with step bars. The way back is via the normal route, which starts half an hour below the summit.

Bert Rinesch via ferrata on the Großer Priel
for mountain pros
Long, steep and difficult - the Bert Rinesch via ferrata is a challenge for all climbers. One of the largest via ferratas in the Eastern Alps takes you from 604 to 2,457 meters above sea level. The ascent alone is 1,300 meters long. The via ferrata was created back in 1994 by Hinterstoder mountain guide Engelbert Eder and his colleagues from the mountain rescue service. It bears the name of the mountain guide Bert Rinesch, who died in an accident in the Totes Gebirge in 1995.
A hiking trail leads from the Johannishof parking lot in Hinterstoder to the Prielschutzhaus in two and a half hours. If you follow the normal route to the Großer Priel, you will reach the actual approach to the via ferrata after an hour. 100 meters after the fork in the Priel and Spitzmauer paths, on the right-hand side. The entrance is under the south-east spur. Return to the Prielschutzhaus on the normal route via the west ridge, Brotfallscharte and snow field in a good two hours.
Caution: Only for experienced mountaineers in good physical condition and with a complete via ferrata set!
