Energy self-sufficient & sustainable by 2030
Our path to the future
For us, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a responsibility we live by. With our own eco care seal, we are sending a clear message: we want to preserve nature, conserve resources, and become energy self-sufficient by 2030. Every step—from innovative energy generation and sustainable mobility to nature-oriented projects—brings us closer to this goal.
An organization with vision
Our leading company in the Pyhrn-Priel region
We, Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen AG, are one of the most important leading tourism companies in the region. For many years, we have been consistently committed to environmentally friendly practices and sustainable development—out of a sense of responsibility toward nature, our guests, and future generations.
Sustainability firmly anchored
With the appointment of Peter Hager as our environmental officer, we have firmly anchored sustainability in our organization. As technical director, he drives forward key issues for the future:
- Experience with projects involving hydrogen vehicles
- Possible expansion of photovoltaic systems
- Development of environmentally friendly travel options
- Regular environmental audits
Experience and goals
We have been working closely with nature conservation and environmental protection for decades – as can be seen, for example, in the natural reservoir lake on the Höss. We want to be energy autonomous by 2028, energy self-sufficient by 2030 at the latest, and significantly reduce our ecological footprint.
Sustainability as a success factor
More and more guests are placing value on criteria such as public transportation, green electricity, and e-mobility. Sustainability is therefore not only an obligation for us, but also a clear success factor in tourism.
Our goals for 2030
For us, sustainability is a process with clear stages.
That is why we have set ourselves specific goals that we want to achieve step by step.
By 2028, we want to operate our mountain railways independently of external energy sources, and by 2030 we want to be completely energy self-sufficient.
To make this vision a reality, we are investing around 40 million euros in the future of our company by 2030.
Our investments are flowing into these areas:
Ecological priorities
Our sustainability is based on four key areas:
Energy, water, environment, and mobility
Energy efficiency
- 15% through intelligent cable car and slope management.
– 15% through direct drive on the new Hössbahn.
GPS-supported snow management saves water and energy.
Water management
We use around 300,000 m³ of water annually for snowmaking – partly from reservoirs and partly from the Steyr river via pumping stations.
We use pure water without additives and return it completely to the natural water cycle.
Our reservoirs, including the Schafkogelsee, cover a large part of our drinking water requirements.
Renewable energies & environment
Our facilities run on 100% green electricity. Photovoltaics are already in use, and we have reforested around 2,000 trees for the new Hössbahn construction.
With our environmental officer, sustainability is firmly anchored in the organization.
Sustainable mobility
Together with ÖBB and OÖ Verkehrsverbund, we offer discounts on tickets for guests who travel by public transport.
We are exploring possibilities for hydrogen-powered vehicles and do not rule out future projects.
Discover how we sustainably connect nature, guests, and the region
— all year round!
Here we show how economic thinking can be combined with ecological responsibility. Sustainability is not an add-on, but the core of our strategy for a modern, year-round, and nature-friendly destination.
For us, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but an approach that shapes our entire business.
We combine innovation—such as renewable energies, intelligent control systems, and potential hydrogen projects—with a nature-oriented approach that preserves our mountain environment.
At the same time, we create offers that enable our guests to enjoy a conscious and responsible vacation experience. For us, sustainability means protecting nature and the environment, making tourism sustainable, and strengthening our region in the long term.
